Road Marking Glass Beads Procurement Checklist: Specifications, Testing and Packaging

What Should Buyers Confirm Before Ordering Road Marking Glass Beads?

For road marking contractors, importers and distributors, a glass bead quotation is useful only when it identifies the product being offered. Two bags with the same weight may contain different bead grades intended for different marking systems.

Before placing a bulk order, buyers should confirm the required specifications, supporting test information and packaging arrangements. The following checklist helps turn a general enquiry into a clearer purchasing request.

1. Intended Use and Marking System

Start by stating whether the beads are required for intermix use, drop-on application or a specified combination. These uses should be identified separately in the enquiry and quotation.

Also identify the marking material: thermoplastic, two-component, water-based or solvent-based paint. Include the application method and equipment where known.

When purchasing beads alongside thermoplastic road marking paint, confirm which beads are included within the paint and which will be supplied separately for surface application. This helps avoid missing quantities or double-counting materials.

2. Particle Size Distribution

Ask for the required grading or sieve distribution rather than relying on descriptions such as “standard beads” or “large beads.”

A purchasing specification should identify the relevant sieve sizes and permitted proportions. If the project provides a grading table, send that table to the supplier for review.

For a dual-drop system, specify the requirements and quantities of each bead grade separately. A larger bead size alone does not establish compliance with a wet-night visibility requirement.

3. Refractive Index and Bead Quality

Specify the required refractive index and the applicable test method. Avoid treating terms such as “high brightness” as a complete technical specification.

Depending on the project requirements, buyers may also need information about roundness, defective particles, clarity and other specified quality characteristics.

Glass bead properties contribute to reflective performance, but the performance of the completed marking also depends on the paint, bead application and site conditions. Product data should therefore be reviewed alongside the requirements for the full marking system.

4. Surface Treatment and Compatibility

Ask whether the offered beads have a surface treatment and what application it is intended to support.

The proposed treatment should be reviewed for compatibility with the selected coating and application process. Beads should not be assumed interchangeable across every paint system.

Where compatibility is uncertain, agree on a sample evaluation before bulk purchasing. Record the bead grade and coating used so the trial can guide the final order.

5. Test Reports and Batch Identification

Request documents that apply to the offered product, such as a specification sheet, available test reports and batch inspection information.

Check the product identification, report date, test method and tested characteristics. A report for one grade should not be used as evidence for a different grade without confirmation.

For repeat orders, retain the approved specification and sample reference. Batch identification helps trace the supplied goods if questions arise after delivery.

6. Packaging and Export Handling

For 25 kg bagged supply, confirm the packaging material, net weight, label information and any requested moisture protection. Private-label artwork should be approved before packaging production.

Also confirm pallet quantities, shipment weight and handling arrangements. Ask the supplier to identify storage recommendations and the transport documents applicable to the actual product.

Compare Quotations Against the Same Requirements

Compare offers using the same bead grade, test requirements, packaging and delivery terms. A lower price may reflect a different specification or supply scope.
