Guide to Thermoplastic Road Marking Primer for Cement Pavement

Cement concrete pavement and asphalt pavement have huge differences in surface material characteristics, internal chemical composition and surface flatness, resulting in completely different bonding performance of thermoplastic road marking lines. Asphalt pavement is rich in asphalt oil components, and high-temperature molten thermoplastic paint can form physical fusion bonding with the road surface naturally, with high inherent adhesion. However, cement concrete pavement contains a large amount of alkaline calcium hydroxide substances, with dense and smooth surface, low surface activity and strong alkali precipitation after long-term exposure to water and air. If thermoplastic paint is directly paved on cement pavement without primer treatment, the alkaline substances inside the cement will continuously corrode the bottom layer of the coating, leading to large-area hollowing, edge warping, peeling and pulverization of marking lines within 6–12 months after construction, which cannot reach the design service life and fails project acceptance.

Thermoplastic special primer for cement pavement is a necessary intermediate coating material to solve the bonding failure problem of marking lines on concrete roads. It can neutralize alkaline substances on cement surface, form a rough transition bonding layer between smooth cement base and hot melt coating, greatly improve the interlayer biting force, and fundamentally avoid the hidden danger of marking peeling. Many overseas construction teams ignore primer construction to save auxiliary material cost and shorten construction time, resulting in serious mass peeling quality accidents of cement road markings, bringing huge rework losses. This article systematically introduces the core functions, product classification, selection standards and standardized construction operation specifications of cement pavement thermoplastic primer, helping construction teams standardize the primer process and stabilize marking bonding quality on concrete roads.

First, four core irreplaceable functions of cement pavement thermoplastic primer.

  1. Neutralize free alkaline substances on cement surface to prevent coating alkali corrosionNew cement concrete pavement will continuously precipitate free alkali components after water washing and long-term air exposure. These alkaline substances will react with the resin inside thermoplastic paint at high temperature, destroy the molecular bonding structure of the coating bottom layer, and cause pulverization and peeling from the bottom up. The primer contains special acid-base neutralizing components, which can react with free alkali on the cement surface after spraying and air-drying, form stable inert compound layer, cut off the alkali corrosion channel and protect the hot melt coating from long-term chemical erosion. This is the most core function that no other auxiliary material can replace.

  2. Increase surface roughness of smooth cement pavement and enhance mechanical biting forceThe surface of finished cement pavement is smooth and dense, with almost no tiny gaps for molten paint to infiltrate. The primer liquid penetrates into the micro-pores of cement during spraying, and forms countless tiny rough anchor points after solvent volatilization and film formation. When high-temperature thermoplastic paint is paved on the primer layer, the molten matrix can fully wrap these rough anchor structures to form strong mechanical biting force, completely solving the problem of insufficient adhesion caused by smooth cement surface.

  3. Seal internal micro-pores of cement to prevent water vapor from bubbling marking linesThere are countless invisible micro-pores inside cement concrete, which will store rainwater and dew for a long time. Direct hot melt paving without primer will heat the water stored in pores to form water vapor, leading to dense pinhole bubbles on the marking line bottom layer. The primer film can seal all micro-pores on the cement surface, lock internal residual moisture and prevent water vapor from overflowing to bubble the coating during high-temperature construction, effectively reducing the bubbling defect rate of cement road markings.

  4. Cover floating slurry and loose surface layer of new cement roadNewly built cement pavement will form a thin layer of loose floating slurry on the surface after curing. If not treated, the floating slurry will separate from the solid cement base under vehicle rolling, taking the marking line off together. The primer can penetrate and consolidate the loose floating slurry layer, integrate the surface loose layer into the overall base, and avoid large-area peeling caused by separation of the surface floating layer in the later stage of marking operation.

Second, classification and selection standards of mainstream cement pavement thermoplastic primer on the market.According to solvent type and applicable climate environment, primers are divided into three mainstream types: conventional solvent-based primer, low-odor environmental protection primer and fast-dry low-temperature special primer, with clear applicable scene division.

  1. Conventional solvent-based cement primerThe most cost-effective universal model, strong alkali neutralization ability, good penetration into cement micro-pores, stable bonding effect under normal temperature and humidity environment. Suitable for temperate zone municipal cement roads, parking lot concrete ground, cement sidewalk marking projects, widely used in medium and low-budget conventional road renovation. Disadvantage: slow drying speed in low temperature environment, construction is not recommended when ambient temperature is lower than 10℃.

  2. Low-odor environmental protection solvent primerReduce the content of highly volatile pungent solvent, low construction odor, meet the environmental protection inspection requirements of EU and high-standard government bidding projects. The alkali neutralization and penetration performance are consistent with conventional primer, matched with high weather-resistant film-forming components, suitable for densely populated urban central roads, school and hospital peripheral cement road marking construction where environmental odor control is required.

  3. Fast-dry low-temperature special primerModified formula for alpine low-temperature and high-humidity regions, fast solvent volatilization speed, can complete full air-drying within 15–20 minutes under 5℃–10℃ ambient temperature, normal construction in cold autumn and winter. Strengthened anti-freeze film-forming structure, the primer film will not crack and lose bonding effect under repeated freeze-thaw cycles, the first choice for cement road projects in high-latitude cold regions.

Key selection judgment indexes for buyers: first check the alkali neutralization efficiency of the primer, the neutralization component content determines the long-term anti-peeling performance; second test the penetration depth to cement micro-pores, shallow penetration leads to weak anchor force; third confirm the drying time matching local construction temperature, avoid slow drying delaying construction progress; fourth select primer with complete MSDS and export safety reports for cross-border project customs clearance filing. It is forbidden to dilute the primer with random industrial solvent in order to save materials, random dilution will destroy the neutralization and film-forming formula ratio, completely lose the anti-peeling function.

Third, full standardized construction process of cement pavement primer, divided into pavement pretreatment, primer spraying, air-drying interval and hot melt paving four steps.Step 1: Thorough pretreatment of cement road surface before primer sprayingUse high-power road grinding machine to polish the thick floating slurry layer on new cement pavement first, remove smooth glazed surface to increase micro-pore gaps. Then use hot air blower to completely blow away cement dust, sediment, oil stains and residual water on the surface. If there are oil stains on the cement ground, clean them with special degreaser first, and blow dry completely after cleaning. It is strictly prohibited to spray primer on damp cement surface with dew and accumulated water, residual moisture will make the primer film blister and lose bonding performance.

Step 2: Standard primer spraying operation and dosage controlDilute the primer according to the factory’s specified dilution ratio, stir evenly before pouring into the airless spraying machine. The standard spraying dosage is 0.25–0.35 kg per square meter; too thin spraying cannot form a complete continuous primer film, failing to neutralize alkali and seal pores; excessive thick spraying leads to prolonged drying time, residual solvent bubbling after hot melt paving. Keep the spraying machine walking speed uniform during construction, the spray fan surface is perpendicular to the road surface, ensure no missing spraying and repeated thick overlapping spraying on the same position. For road edge corners and crack dense areas, manually supplement spraying to avoid primer blank areas.

Step 3: Strictly reserve primer full air-drying interval timeThis is the most easily ignored key step by construction teams. The primer film must completely volatilize all internal solvent before hot melt paving, otherwise residual solvent will vaporize at high temperature to form large hollow bubbles between the marking line and cement base. The drying time is adjusted according to ambient temperature and humidity: above 20℃, reserve 20–30 minutes of air-drying; 10℃–20℃ environment, extend to 40–60 minutes; below 10℃, use fast-dry low-temperature primer and reserve more than 60 minutes of drying interval. The judgment standard for complete drying: touch the primer film surface with clean fingers, no sticky feeling and no solvent odor volatilization. It is forbidden to pave thermoplastic paint on wet sticky primer film for rushing construction period.

Step 4: Hot melt paving matching requirements after primer air-dryingAfter the primer layer is fully dried, complete the hot melt marking paving within the same day as much as possible. If the interval exceeds 24 hours, dust will adhere to the primer film surface, forming an isolation layer to reduce bonding force. If long-time interval is unavoidable, blow the primer surface with hot air again before paving to remove floating dust. The melting temperature and construction thickness standard of thermoplastic paint remain consistent with conventional construction requirements, the primer layer will not affect the fluidity and molding effect of molten hot melt coating.

Fourth, common construction mistakes of cement primer and corresponding hidden quality risks.Mistake 1: Cancel primer construction to save auxiliary material cost. Direct paving on cement surface leads to alkali corrosion and large-area peeling of marking lines within half a year, full-line removal and repainting required.Mistake 2: Randomly dilute primer with excessive solvent to reduce dosage consumption. The effective neutralization and film-forming components are diluted too thin, incomplete alkali neutralization and discontinuous sealing film, resulting in local bubbling and partial peeling of marking lines.Mistake 3: Shorten drying interval and pave hot melt paint before primer is dry. Residual solvent vaporizes at high temperature to form a large number of hollow bubbles between coating and pavement base, the marking line bulges and falls off in pieces after a period of use.Mistake 4: Spray primer on damp cement pavement with dew and rainwater. The primer film cannot form complete film layer after mixing with water, loses all anti-alkali and anchoring functions, and the bonding force is basically invalid.

In conclusion, special primer for cement concrete pavement is an indispensable supporting auxiliary material for thermoplastic marking construction on concrete roads, undertaking four core functions of alkali neutralization, rough anchoring, pore sealing and loose layer consolidation. Strictly matching the primer type according to local climate, standardizing spraying dosage and sufficient air-drying interval can fundamentally solve the common quality problems of bubbling, hollowing and peeling of cement road marking lines, greatly extend the service life of thermoplastic markings on concrete pavement and ensure one-time passing of project acceptance.
